Controller switches serial
devices to USB
A novel device simplifies connectivity between serial based embedded applications and new laptops or legacy-free PCs
Supporting both self- and bus-powered modes, the TUSB3410 is ideal for upgrading serial devices to a fast, flexible USB interface by bridging between a high-speed USB port and an enhanced universal asynchronous receiver/transmitters (UART) serial port. TI's TUSB3410 includes all the necessary logic to communicate effectively and efficiently with the host computer using the USB.

The solution contains an 8052 microcontroller unit (MCU) with 16Kbyte of RAM that can be loaded from the host or from an external onboard memory via an I2C bus.
To allow the MCU to configure the USB port at boot-time, there are 10Kbyte of ROM, which also contains an I2C boot loader.
The TUSB3410, which is fully compliant with USB Full Speed specifications, supports a data rate of 12Mbit/s and can sustain six total endpoints - three inputs and three outputs.
Additional features include: a built-in two-channel DMA controller for USB/UART bulk I/O; operation from a 12MHz crystal; support for USB suspend and resume; and support for remote wake-up.
The TUSB3410 is available now from TI and its authorised distributors.
The device is packaged in a 32 pin LQFP.
Planned pricing is $2.50 each in quantities of 1000.
