A new four-channel, 24bit audio DAC from the Burr-Brown Pro Audio product line features 118dB dynamic range, -100dB total harmonic distortion and up to 200kHz sampling

The PCM4104 is designed for professional audio applications, such as digital mixing consoles, digital effects processors, multitrack recorders, broadcast studio equipment, surround sound processors and high-end A/V receivers. 'The PCM4104 is the industry's highest performance four-channel audio DAC.

There is no other audio DAC on the market that offers this level of integration and performance', said Mike Centorino, Marketing Manager for TI's Burr-Brown Pro Audio products.

'The PCM4104 also features low-power operation with around 200mW total power consumption for all four channels, while competitive high-performance audio DACs consume the same power for only two channels'.

The low power consumption of the PCM4104 makes it ideal for high channel count applications by lowering the overall power budget required for the digital-to-analogue conversion subsystem.

The PCM4104 employs delta-sigma technology with a high-performance, multilevel modulator and a switched capacitor output filter.

This architecture yields lower out of band noise and a high tolerance to system clock phase jitter.

Differential voltage outputs (6.15V peak-peak) are provided for each channel and are well suited to high-performance audio applications.

The differential outputs are easily converted to a single-ended output using an external operational amplifier IC.

The PCM4104 includes a flexible audio serial port interface, which supports standard and time division multiplexed (TDM) data formats.

Support for TDM formats simplifies interfacing to an audio DSP, such as TI's C6713 Pro Audio DSP, while supporting a cascade connection of several PCM4104 devices.

The device offers two configuration modes: standalone and software controlled.

Stand-alone mode provides dedicated control pins for configuring a subset of the available functions, whereas software mode uses a serial peripheral interface (SPI) port for accessing the complete feature set via internal control registers.

The PCM4104 operates from a +5V analogue power supply and a +3.3V digital power supply.

The digital I/O is compatible with +3.3V logic families.

The PCM4104 is packaged in a 48-lead TQFP and is available now from TI and its authorised distributors.

An evaluation module is also available.
