Three new bus switch families enhance the performance of datacomms and networking equipment, and optimise next-generation portable computing and communications designs

Texas Instruments has expanded its signal switch portfolio with the CB3T, CB3Q and CBT-C bus switch families. These new FET switches provide high-performance, low-power replacements for standard bus-interface devices when signal buffering (current drive) is not required. The CB3T, CB3Q, and CBT-C bus switch families optimise next-generation datacomms, networking, computing, portable communications, and consumer electronic designs, by supporting both digital and analogue applications, including PCI interface, USB interface, memory interleaving, bus isolation, and low-distortion signal gating.

Today's system designers face the challenge of supporting mixed-mode signal operation, and therefore need bus-interface devices that provide input to output level shifting (ie voltage translation).

The CB3T family provides this needed voltage translation interface between components that require the different signalling standards (TTL, LVTTL etc) common in mixed system environments.

Another challenge is to increase the performance of multichannel applications that require transmission of huge amounts of data.

The CB3Q family provides a high-performance interface solution ideal for communications and networking infrastructure equipment, as well as other data-intensive computing applications.

In addition, the higher signal switching speeds associated with today's high-performance systems often create the problem of increased undershoot, a potential source of data corruption.

The active undershoot protection circuitry in TI's CBT-C family, greatly reduces the possibility of undershoot induced data corruption in these high-speed applications.

'These new bus switch family releases illustrate our commitment to taking leadership in this market by providing system designers with high-performance bus-interface solutions to enhance their future system designs', stated David Hoover, WW Product Marketing Manager for TI's Standard Linear and Logic Division.

'These families leverage TI's advanced Logic process technologies to create the highest performance switches in the market, as well as setting new levels in cost efficiency'.

CB3T is a voltage translator bus switch family operating at 3.3 or 2.5V, supporting systems using 5V TTL, 3.3V LVTTL and 2.5V CMOS switching standards.

CB3T devices fully support mixed-mode signal operation on all ports by providing 5V input to 3.3V output level shifting with a 3.3V Vcc, and 5 or 3.3V input to 2.5V output level shifting with a 2.5V Vcc.

This voltage translation feature allows the CB3T family to provide a high-performance interface between components (memory, processors, logic, ASICs, I/O peripherals etc), that require the different signalling standards (5V TTL, 3.3V LVTTL, 2.5V CMOS etc) common in mixed 2.5 to 5V system environments.

Specifically designed to support today's portable computing and communications applications, the CB3T family provides a high-performance low-power interface solution ideally suited for laptop computers, PDAs, cellphones, as well as any accompanying docking stations.

CB3Q is a high-performance bus switch family operating at 3.3 or 2.5V, supporting systems using 5V TTL, 3.3V LVTTL and 2.5V CMOS switching standards.

CB3Q devices provide very-low and flat on-state resistance, 0 to 5V rail-to-rail switching (no voltage clamping), and very-low input/output capacitance to minimise capacitive loading and signal distortion.

The CB3Q family provides a high-performance interface solution for communications and networking infrastructure equipment (switches, routers, hubs, wireless basestations, network storage), as well as other data-intensive applications (servers, workstations, video processing, USB and PCI interface applications).

CBT-C is a general purpose bus switch family operating at 5V, supporting systems using 5V TTL and 3.3V LVTTL switching standards.

The new CBT-C family offers numerous enhancements over the original CBT family, including: -2V undershoot protection, faster enable/disable times, and an Ioff feature for partial-power-down applications.

The improved undershoot characteristics of the CBT-C family are particularly important in system environments where signal reflections and undershoot are common.

Without such protection an undershoot event could cause a switch in the off state to be turned on, creating bus contention and data corruption.

The active undershoot protection circuitry employed in the CBT-C family provides protection for undershoot down to -2V by sensing an undershoot event and ensuring that the switch remains in the proper off state.

Functions in all three bus switch technology families are available now from Texas Instruments and its authorised distributors.

Remaining functions will continue to be released throughout 2003.

CB3Q, CB3T and CBT-C devices will be made available in numerous advanced packaging options, such as the shrink small-outline package (SSOP), thin shrink small-outline package (TSSOP), thin very small-outline package (TVSOP), very fine pitch ball grid array package (VFBGA) and quad flatpack no-lead package (QFN) for reduced board area.
