Controllers provide PFC and PWM in one
A novel family of combination controllers combines power factor correction and pulsewidth modulation functions on one integrated circuit
A novel family of combination controllers from Texas Instruments combines power factor correction (PFC) and pulsewidth modulation (PWM) functions on to one integrated circuit, providing system designers with a high degree of efficiency and performance to offline distributed power systems such as desktop and server power convertors, and monitor and display power systems.

Offering an array of features and performance advantages over competing PFC/PWM combination controllers, the UCC2851x family of devices provides complete control functionality for any off-line power system that meets IEC1000-3-2 harmonic reduction requirements.
The PWM stage in UCC2851x features programmable maximum duty cycle and PWM frequency options that are twice the base PFC frequency.
For the PFC stage, the controllers offer enhanced transient response through an improved multiplier and a transconductance amplifier.
All members of the UCC2851x family employ leading-edge PFC and the trailing-edge PWM modulation schemes that minimise the ripple current in the boost capacitor.
The UCC2851x series also features high current gate drive outputs rated at 3A sink and 2A source to reduce switching losses in the power devices and to allow higher frequency operation.
The family offers different undervoltage lockout (UVLO) threshold options for both PFC and PWM stages to support different bias schemes and load transient requirements.
UCC2851x family of advanced PFC/PWM controllers are available now from TI and its authorised distributors in 20-pin wide-body small outline integrated circuit (SOIC-W) and plastic dual inline (PDIP) packaging.
A UCC28517 evaluation module is scheduled to be available by end of the first quarter with a universal line input 100W PFC output with 12V, 8W bias rail supply design.
Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1000 units is $1.69.
