Audio DSP powers JVC's new A/V receiver

JVC has selected a 32/64bit floating-point audio DSP from Texas Instruments for its latest A/V receiver, the RX-DP20VBK

Optimised for digital audio applications, the TI device enables JVC to quickly and easily deliver a compelling, realistic listening experience and create a feature-rich, cost-effective system. Scheduled to be available in January 2003, the JVC RX-DP20VBK audio/video control receiver will offer one of the most complete home theatre experiences available.

With 7.1 multichannel high-resolution audio capabilities, the receiver is fully compatible with all audio formats including DVD-Audio systems, Dolby Digital 5.1, Home THX and THX Ultra 2 Certified Surround EX.

TI's solution also brings sophisticated dual-zone capabilities to the RX-DP20VBK.

This allows listeners in different rooms to listen to different audio sources at the same time.

The new receiver also features seven independent 120W amplifiers and an independent direct power supply with separate analogue and digital transformers.

The TMS320DA610, which is part of TI's Aureus family of audio DSPs, is a 225MHz floating point DSP that delivers 1800MIPS and 32/64bit native processing.

This high performance is critical to the delivery of next-generation digital audio features because it enables OEMs to add proprietary audio processing algorithms to their system even while decoding the most demanding standards.

The DA610 also features an open audio framework that gives manufacturers a flexible environment in which to easily add the features that will differentiate their products and help them win their markets.

'Working with the flexibility and performance of TI's 32/64 audio DSP, we can deliver the next generation of audio features and realism to our customers', said Karl Bearnarth, vice president of JVC.

'We can take advantage of the Aureus chip's headroom to add our own differentiating algorithms on top of those that are vital but don't necessarily set us apart from the competition'.

Consumers are demanding life-like sound quality and more features in their home entertainment products.

To deliver this, manufacturers need to offer more channels, a higher sampling rate, arithmetic precision and a breadth of multi-channel digital audio formats.

To succeed, they must have access to silicon and software that deliver higher performance, greater flexibility and facilitate the differentiation of products.

Only TI's Aureus audio DSPs address these needs.

The Aureus platform is based on the proven silicon and tools of the code-compatible TMS320C6000T DSP platform, featuring peripherals such as a 32bit EMIF, two I2C ports and a 16-channel EDMA.

The DA610 also features two new multi-channel audio serial ports (McASP) that allow up to 16 stereo channels of I2S per port.

These ports are also compatible with the S/PDIF standard.

These highly integrated technologies are seamlessly combined with an audio software framework that is accessible through TI's easy-to-use Code Composer Studio development tools.

With this difficult integration already completed, manufacturers can dedicate their engineering time and dollars to adding features that differentiate their products and get them to market more quickly.

The JVC RX-DP20VBK A/V receiver is expected to be available in January of 2003 at a nationally advertised value of $2500.
