Touch screen controller
takes stereo codec onboard
The TSC2301 is a novel programmable touch screen controller with integrated stereo audio codec for handheld applications
The new device simplifies software programming, provides superior stereo sound, and improves system speed in handheld computing applications such as PDAs, smart phones, MP3 players and Internet appliances. 'With voice and music being integrated into nearly all next-generation handheld computing devices, the TSC2301 provides designers with a completely programmable, easy-to-use, low-power touch screen controller featuring a high-performance 20bit, 48Ksample/s stereo audio codec with high signal-to-noise ratio', said Scott Ngo, senior strategic marketing engineer for TI's data acquisition products.

The TSC2301 offers built-in processing units which allow the device to perform all touch screen processing tasks without microprocessor interaction such as touch detection, programmable touch screen (x-y) driver and conversion control, data average filtering and panel voltage stabilisation.
This coprocessing solution reduces microprocessor ISR (interrupt service routine) overhead and saves significant number of MIPS for microprocessors - allowing the system to run faster and more efficiently.
The TSC2301's audio codec uses an advanced design architecture optimised to support full audio recording and playback sampling rates required by different audio quality standards such as FM broadcast, CD and MP3.
It provides integrated microphone/speaker amplifiers, programmable bass/treble/EQ filtering and a high quality 98dB playback signal-to-noise ratio to produce superior stereo audio.
The successive approximation analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC) uses on-chip drivers to support position, pressure and plate resistance measurements in four-wire resistive touch screen applications.

The TSC2301 offers programmable resolution from 8 to 12bit and sampling rates up to 125kHz to accommodate different screen sizes.
The device interfaces to the host microprocessor through standard SPI and I2S serial interfaces.
The highly-integrated TSC2301 also includes a 4x4 keypad interface with on-chip scanning and debouncing, an 8bit digital-to-analogue convertor output for LCD back light or contrast control, direct battery measurement (up to 6V) and two auxiliary ADC inputs which can be used for USB or AC adapter detection.
Other features include low power consumption with full power down control, register-based storage of all conversion data and single-supply operation from 2.7 to 3.6V.
An on-chip temperature sensor provides readings with 0.3C resolution.
The TSC2301 is packaged in a 64-pin TQFP and priced at $4.95 in 1000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
