Siemens IC Mobile and Texas Instruments have jointly developed what they claim to be the industry's smallest single-chip digital baseband solution for GSM basestations

The device performs all signal processing functions needed for a GSM carrier and is fully software backward compatible and downloadable. This future-proof solution combines standard TI DSPs with Siemens IP and SRAM onto a single device. In conjunction with TI's latest wireless infrastructure DSP technology, this solution fully supports all advanced features such as GPRS, Edge, GERAN, narrowband-AMR and wideband-AMR.

By combining seven devices onto a single chip - including TI's TMS320C5000T DSP technology - customers can achieve faster development time, higher reliability and use less board space, making Siemens' GSM/EDGE one of the most cost-effective digital mobile radio standards in terms of cost per channel.

Thanks to its 100% software compatibility with the former discrete solution, no changes to the proven software are required, eliminating any software risk for system upgrades.

The new system therefore offers high design and implementation flexibility and enables Siemens to provide a full set of solutions within the range of GSM-Edge micro and macro basestations.

'Working together with TI, we are now able to offer a single, easy-to-configure platform for the most widely adopted wireless communication standards', said Dr Helmut Lagger, senior vice president of Siemens Mobile Radio Development.

'This GSM platform provides the ideal solution for all types of basestations and reduces the cost of ownership for our customers'.

'We are excited that our work with Siemens now results in the implementation of this leading-edge technology product', said David Shepard, general manager of TI's wireless infrastructure business unit.

'This is an important step in the upgrade path to 3G'.

The platform is fully scalable to Edge with the addition of TI's TMS320C6416 600MHz DSP.

The C6416 DSP is tailored for wireless infrastructure applications such as base-stations.

With its on-chip coprocessors and unique architecture, the C6416 DSP helps drive down the cost per channel, ease system design and speed time to market.

Edge is an evolution of the GSM standard, designed to deliver data at rates up to 384Kbit/s and enable the delivery of multimedia and other broadband applications to mobile phone and computer users.

The SoC digital baseband combining Texas Instruments and Siemens IP is manufactured in TI's advanced low-power 0.18um process technology.
