DSP runs next-generation Windows media
Enabling IP-based streaming media appliance OEMs to capture the next wave in digital media, Texas Instruments has ported the Windows Media 9 Series encoder onto its TMS320C64xT DSP platform
With its 600MHz processing power, TI's C64x DSP platform will highlight the many improvements in Microsoft's newest platform. TI will demonstrate these latest capabilities at the International Broadcasting Convention, starting today in Amsterdam. Offering enhanced video and bitrate quality capabilities, the Windows Media 9 Series on TI's DSP platform gives broadcast, video infrastructure and digital media client equipment OEMs dramatic improvements in streaming and buffering across distribution networks.

For high-end digital media centre OEMs, convergence is one step closer allowing an all-in-one product for digital media compression, streaming video transmission, HDD storage and more.

TI will demonstrate a beta version of the Windows Media 9 Series encoder running on TI's recently announced network video developers kit (NVDK) at 720x480 D1 resolution, 30 frame/s.
TI's NVDK provides OEMs with the key hardware and software elements needed to accelerate their development time.
A production release version of the NVDK with the Windows Media 9 Series encoder will be available in January 2003.
'With this implementation of the Windows Media 9 Series encoder on an embedded programmable digital media platform, TI is offering its customers the best mix of price/performance and power consumption for IP-based streaming media appliances', said Eric Braddom, worldwide manager, video and imaging business unit at Texas Instruments.
'Previously, the Windows Media 9 Series encoders were available at this performance level only on PC-based microprocessors.
TI's C64x DSP digital media platform is an attractive option for the next generation of high performance embedded digital media applications'.
