Cardbus and FireWire
controllers come together
Texas Instruments has combined its industry-leading Cardbus and FireWire controllers into a single small-footprint device
The new low-power solution will benefit makers of corporate and consumer notebook PCs, as well as legacy-free and small-form-factor desktop PCs. TI's new PCI4510 controller provides full Cardbus and IEEE1394a functionality in a single package. The device integrates a single-slot Cardbus controller, an IEEE1394a OHCI 1.1 link layer controller and a two-port 400Mbit/s IEEE1394a physical layer.

Another device, the PCI4520 controller, is identical to the PCI4510 except for the integration of a dual-slot Cardbus controller.
Packaging options for the PCI4510 include the industry's smallest ball grid array (MicroStar BGA) among competing devices for increased savings in board space.
Both of the new controllers reduce component counts and allow designers to route fewer traces by implementing only one PCIbus for the support of both Cardbus and IEEE 394.

The PCI4510/20 controllers are designed for low power consumption, with core logic operating at 1.8V and I/O functions at 3.3V.
Universal PCI interfaces are compatible with both 3.3 and 5V signalling environments, providing flexibility in design.

'TI is committed to helping system manufacturers reduce space, power consumption and costs with PC connectivity products', said Steven Mills, business manager for Computer Connectivity Solutions at TI.
'In addition, TI's leadership in connectivity helps extend the range of capabilities in future generations of PCs, enabling system manufacturers to bring new forms of communication to end users affordably'.
TI's new PCI4510 single-slot Cardbus/dual-port IEEE1394a controller will be available in July from TI.
Package options include a space-saving 209-ball (GHK) MicroStar BGA and a 208-lead (PDT) low-profile quad flatpack (LQFP).
Recommended retail pricing for the PCI4510 is $6.00 each in quantities of 10,000.
The PCI4520 dual-slot Cardbus/dual-port IEEE 1394a controller is scheduled for production during the fourth quarter of 2002.
The device is packaged in a 257-ball (GHK) MicroStar BGA.
Planned pricing is $7.00 each in quantities of 10,000.
