Low-voltage power modules for
swift time to market
Texas Instruments has released a family of ready-to-use power supply modules based on its popular Swift DC/DC convertors
The modules provide up to 6A of output current from a low input voltage, all in a small-profile, fully featured solution that can be soldered directly onto the system board. The easy-to-use Swift module benefits point-of-load applications such as digital signal processors, ASICs, FPGAs, microprocessors and microcontrollers used in communications, networking, computers and a wide variety of other applications.

TI's PT5400 Swift power modules combine the TPS54610 Swift regulator with all necessary external components to create a complete power supply solution with input voltages of 3.3 and 5V and output voltages ranging from 1.0 to 3.3V.
Further output voltage adjustment can be achieved by adding an external resistor.
The modules are extremely efficient, with ratings of 93% at 4A.

Additional design flexibility and protection features include short-circuit protection, standby, output inhibit and thermal shutdown.
PT5400 modules offer a fast way to prototype and meet initial production deadlines, saving designers time with a ready-made power supply solution.
The manufacturer can then reduce costs for high-volume production by using the Swift convertors and the exact same circuit designed directly onto the motherboard.
In the future, to make point-of-load power supply design even easier and more flexible, TI plans to offer additional modules based on other Swift convertors.
'TI is unique in offering both power supply ICs and power modules', said Steve Anderson, business manager of TI's Plug-In Power group.
'The PT5400 is another way we are helping our customers ease their power supply design challenges by creating a complete power solution in an easy-to-use module'.
The PT5400 modules are packaged in TI's small-profile Excalibur case, with a 5-pin single-inline package (SIP) configuration-surface-mount, horizontal through-hole and vertical through-hole options available.
Measuring less than 25 x 25mm, Excalibur cases meet critical 8mm height tolerances in horizontal mounting and provides excellent thermal dissipation for circuit protection.
The modules can also be reflowed with the entire motherboard assembly at temperatures up to 215C, eliminating post-reflow mounting steps in board manufacture.
TI's PT5400 Swift power modules are now available in sample quantities.
TI is accepting orders for volume production, with lead times of eight to ten weeks.
Pricing per module in quantities of 1000 is $11.82.
