Texas Instruments and Motorola have combined to create and deliver certified data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 cable modems for the broadband cable market

Motorola's next-generation cable modem is based on TI's proven DOCSIS 1.1 silicon and software, and also implements the new DOCSIS 2.0 advanced time division multiple access (A-TDMA) physical layer standard. 'As the leading cable modem supplier, we understand the importance of bringing industry-certified products to market quickly', said John Burke, corporate vice-president and general manager, Motorola IP Communications Gateway business unit.

'TI's system expertise and proven-DOCSIS 1.1 software helps us accomplish this goal while we expand our cable modem portfolio and build upon our market leadership.

With A-TDMA technology built-in, we are able to offer our customers next generation cable modem technology today'.

Motorola's SURFboard SB4220 cable modem will incorporate TI's complete DOCSIS system solution which integrates DOCSIS physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers of the open system interconnect (OSI) reference model, with a high performance communications processor and peripherals for networking and communication applications.

This solution also integrates the A-TDMA advanced physical layer, which is specified in the CableLabs DOCSIS 2.0 specification.

TI was an early leader in the development of the A-TDMA physical layer standard in CableLabs and has been shipping product with A-TDMA for almost a year.

'TI is very pleased to be teaming with Motorola for DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 cable modems', said Brett Butler, general manager of TI's Cable Broadband Communications.

'We transitioned from initial discussions to having a certifiable Motorola modem in a very short time.

This could only be accomplished with great collaboration and a complete product.

We are particularly excited about the fact that the first TI-based cable modems at Motorola will have the A-TDMA advanced physical layer capability specified in the CableLabs DOCSIS 2.0 standard'.
