Development kit puts mobile
software to the test
New from Texas Instruments is the Innovator development kit for the Series 60 based on TI's OMAP platform
The Series 60 platform is a terminal software platform for smart phones that Nokia licenses to other mobile handset manufacturers as a source-code product. With the new development kit for the Series 60, application developers and handset manufacturers will be able to simulate and validate their applications in a close-to-final mobile terminal environment.

Developers will have the ability to easily port new 2.5G and 3G applications to TI's OMAP family of high-performance, power-efficient application processors, including the OMAP710 and OMAP1510.
The Innovator development kit for the Series 60 based on TI's OMAP platform is scheduled to be available in the fourth quarter of 2002.
'Our combined offering with TI will offer a very compelling and open development platform for application developers', said Jukka Riivari, Director, Mobile Software, Nokia.
'The Series 60 platform supports open and global technology enablers, such as browsing, multimedia messaging and Java( application downloading, already widely adopted by applications developers.
The Series 60 will provide application developers with the opportunity to extend their mobile solutions based on open enablers to the mass market by building complementary functions with symbian OS native support.

'TI's Innovator development kit for the Series 60 platform is the perfect tool for application developers and manufacturers to build on and demonstrate high-performance applications and smart phones on a battery-operated handheld', said David Potts, worldwide director of applications for TI's OMAP platform.
'By using the new development and demonstration kit, Nokia and TI will help the Series 60 application developers quickly demonstrate wireless communications-centric applications, and device manufacturers develop Series 60 smart phones powered by TI's OMAP processors that ultimately enhances a mobile user's experience'.
The highly integrated kit will include a set of robust components specified by the Series 60 platform and TI's OMAP application processors and modem solutions.
The Innovator development kit for the Series 60 and the OMAP platform will have an interface module, which includes a colour screen, a keypad and all other components required by the Series 60.
An optional expansion module will include support for GSM and GPRS.
A breakout board by TI will include additional external peripherals and a 10Mbit/s Ethernet connection.
In addition, the Innovator kit's baseboard will give developers the ability to easily call on the enhanced media processing capabilities in TI's powerful DSP core in the OMAP 1510 processor, using familiar, existing high-level OS development tools.
'The Innovator kit for Series 60 based on TI's OMAP platform and the open Symbian OS are a fantastic synergy to enable easier and faster development of applications for mobile phones', said Gilles Allain, Vice-President, Account Management and Partnerships, Symbian.
'This will mean a more compelling offering and an enriched end user experience, hence speeding up the adoption of mobile data services'.
Mobile handset manufacturers who license the Series 60 Platform will be able to integrate the software platform into their own phone designs running on top of the Symbian OS.
The Series 60 Platform includes mobile browsing, multimedia messaging and content downloading, as well as a host of personal information management and telephony applications.
In addition, it includes a complete and customisable user interface - all designed to run on top of the Symbian OS, an advanced open operating system for data enabled mobile phones.
The Series 60 Platform also comes with open Java and Symbian application development environments that allow third party developers to create exciting new applications and services that can be run on any Series 60 based phone.
