DSP drops to cost-sensitive applications
Texas Instruments reckons its latest TMS320C64x DSP offers more millions of multiply accumulates per dollar and per watt than any competing product, opening up some novel applications
Texas Instruments reckons its latest TMS320C64x DSP offers more millions of multiply accumulates (MMACS) per dollar and per watt than any competing product, enabling innovative application entries. 'TI recognises that one size does not fit all', said Yvonne Cager, TMS320C6000 DSP marketing manager, TI.

'Our customers are designing applications that require performance but are also power and price sensitive, and the C6411 was designed to meet those needs'.
With a 250mW core at 1.0V, the C6411 DSP is the lowest power DSP in this class on the market, and still delivers 300MHz, 2400MIPs and 1200MMACS of performance.
It is also the lowest cost C64x DSP, available for $39 in 10k-unit quantities.
The new chip enables rapid development of applications that require high degrees of performance and programmability yet also demand high power efficiency at a low price point.
In addition to an industry leading performance-efficient core, the new C6411 DSP features: a 64-channel enhanced direct memory access (EDMA) for superior I/O efficiency; a 32bit external memory interface (EMIF) for high bandwidth to memory; two McBSPs for easy audio and telecomms interfacing; two 32bit timers with the ability to count external events; an HPI32/33MHz PCI to simplify host connectivity; a 16bit general purpose I/O which can be programmed to generate different CPU interrupts and EDMA events; and a 23mm/532 BGA package.

The feature set of the new TMS320C6411 DSP is ideal for programmable, networked security appliances such as iris scanners.
This technology demands high-level processing capabilities to examine the richly coloured patterns surrounding the pupil of the eye, which requires three times the image analysis complexity of other security appliances such as fingerprint verification.
This increase in image analysis complexity is easily handled by the C6411 DSP, a high performance C engine with a compiler that leverages the architecture to sustain maximum performance while speeding designer development time for this and other high-performance, yet cost-sensitive applications.
The C6411 DSP is code-compatible with all 20 devices in the TMS320C6000 DSP platform, giving designers confidence in a proven technology that has successfully driven thousands of products.
The C6411 DSP is supported by TI's eXpressDSP software and development tools, including the Code Composer Studio v2 integrated development environment (IDE), the industry's most easy-to-use DSP IDE, and the DSP/BIOST real-time kernel.
TI's library of DSP and imaging software modules, best-in-class software development tools and eXpressDSP-compliant products from the DSP industry's largest third party network all add up to faster time to market for the designers of performance-efficient embedded applications.
TI has reduced the cost of its C6416 DSP test and evaluation board, which allows designers to accelerate the design process for applications using the industry's highest performing TMS320C64x DSPs.
It is fully code-compatible with the new C6411 DSP, so developers can get started designing their applications today.
The C6416 TEB also offers value-added features and hardware components designed to enable rapid development and speed manufacturers to market.
In addition, TI has developed the industry's most comprehensive support network to help designers get started today.
Since a supplier should be a continuous resource to its customers, TI's network encompasses four major areas: training, technical documentation, access to experts and TI's website.
Samples of the TMS320C6411 DSP will be available in 3Q 2002 with full production in 4Q 2002, with pricing currently at $39 for 10k-unit quantities.
