Texas Instruments and Alvesta have confirmed the interoperability of TI's TLK3114SA backplane serialiser-deserialiser (serdes) and Alvesta's 3200 optical transceiver for 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Operating together, the TI and Alvesta devices provide a low-cost, low-power system solution for IEEE 802.3ae 10 gigabit Ethernet transmission over fibre optics for distances up to 100m using standard bandwidth multimode fibre. TI will demonstrate the full system implementation in Booth 2214 at the Optical Fibre Communications Conference, 17th-22nd March 2002 at Anaheim, California.

The demonstration system includes the commonly used 10 Gigabit media-independent interface (XGMII), 10 Gigabit attachment unit interface (XAUI) and fibre optic cables.

'The interoperability of the TI serdes and Alvesta optical transceiver demonstrates an extremely cost effective solution for short-distance 10 Gigabit Ethernet transport', said Robert Nalesnik, vice president of marketing at Alvesta.

'The successful collaboration between TI and Alvesta will further drive market demand for enterprise, access, edge and storage-area networks'.

The TI and Alvesta products complement each other in enabling low-cost, high-bandwidth data transport over fibre optics.

Alvesta's innovative use of vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology supports optical signalling over short distances using inexpensive fibre-optic cabling.

TI's advanced analogue processes and backplane systems expertise enable serdes products designed to drive the high-speed system electronic interface.

'The verified interoperability of TI's TLK3114SA and Alvesta's 3200 provides a low-cost solution for 10 Gigabit Ethernet using standard XAUI and XGMII interfaces', said Atul Patel, marketing manager for High Speed Communications and Controls at TI.

'This demonstration shows TI's commitment to providing enabling technology for ultra-high-speed electrical or optical communications'.

Alvesta was the first supplier in the industry with a 10Gbit/s, four-channel parallel optics transceiver optimised for data transport.

The Alvesta 3200 supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Fibre Channel data over distances up to 100m.

The Alvesta 3100 supports Sonet/SDH OC-48c/192c and InfiniBand 4x data over distances up to 300m.

TI's TLK3114SA 10 Gigabit Ethernet backplane serdes is sampling now, with volume production planned for May 2002.

An earlier-generation device, the TLK3104SA, is already available in production quantities.

The TLK3114SA is packaged in a 289-bump BGA.

Planned pricing for the TLK3114SA is $62.50 each in quantities of 1000.

The Alvesta 3200 is currently available, and has been shipping since February 2001.

Transceiver pricing ranges from $300 and $500 based on quantity.
