McubeWorks is to develop complete reference designs for 2.5 and 3G CDMA2000 1x networks based on TI's wireless multimedia technology

SK Telecom, one of the world's largest CDMA cellular service operators based in Korea, plans to conduct field trials of this multimedia service reference design providing CDMA wireless customers with a network that will support high-quality video on demand (VoD) and other multimedia applications, such as voice-over-picture and streaming sound.

By using TI's OMAP 1510 processor, which includes TI's TMS320C5000 DSP and an ARM RISC processor, the reference design will provide wireless system developers with a complete hardware solution and McubeWorks' software solution supporting H.26L streaming video with audio.

The reference design, called MoC (media on chip), is a chipset coupling TI's low power, high-performance DSP technology with McubeWorks' highly efficient coding technology and wireless adaptive service protocol that will bring VoD straight to consumers' wireless handsets.

The embedded multimedia algorithms and protocols will also provide the interfacing scheme and software to modem processors.

The solution will be tested at SK Telecom's CDMA2000 1x network beginning in the first quarter of 2002.

'SK Telecom is supporting McubeWorks in the development of a core technology for wireless multimedia service optimised for SK Telecom's network', said Yosub Kim, SK Telecom senior manager.

'By leveraging TI's advanced high performance, power-efficient OMAP platform technology and McubeWorks' spectrum efficient and reliable wireless multimedia technologies, we expect to use advanced multimedia solutions while extending battery life for wireless handsets'.

'Providing McubeWorks with the high-performance, power-efficient wireless multimedia platform necessary to develop reference designs for industry-leading cellular operators like SK Telecom's CDMA network reinforces our commitment to enable 2.5 and 3G wireless markets worldwide', said Alain Mutricy, worldwide OMAP general manager of TI's wireless terminals Business Unit.

'This exciting service will be an integral part of the deployment of next generation wireless devices leveraging the latest bandwidth capabilities'.
