Texas Instruments Incorporated has released the industry's first floating-point devices operating at 1350MFLOPS with processing power at 225MHz

TI has also reduced the cost of the TMS320C6711 and TMS320C6712 DSPs by 30%, while increasing their performance to 1200MFLOPS (200MHz) and 900MFLOPS (150MHz), respectively. The dynamic range delivered by floating-point DSPs is increasingly needed to deliver the highest possible levels of resolution to applications requiring high precision.

Since the introduction of the TMS320C67x DSP generation in 1997, TI has delivered a family of code-compatible high performance floating-point devices at attractive price points.

Customers are able to enjoy the advantages of using a floating-point device because of the ease-of-use it provides designers.

Designers looking to enhance the capabilities of next generation audio applications can leverage the 225MHz performance of the C6713 DSP which is developed in 0.13-micron copper process technology.

By combining this performance with tailored peripherals, TI offers an integrated solution allowing designers to reduce system size, cost and power consumption.

The added peripherals include: two multichannel audio serial ports; up to 16 stereo channels of Inter IC Sound at four different clock rates; a large on-chip memory of 256Kbyte of L2 cache; 4Kbyte of L1 program memory and data memory; a 16-channel enhanced direct-memory-access controller; two Inter IC Control ports; and a 16bit host processor interface.

The C6713 DSP can perform eight 32bit instructions per cycle, which translates into exceptionally fine pitch movement for robotics applications.

Imaging systems employed in medical and graphic production environments can take advantage of the C6713 DSP's ability to enable real-time manipulation of data for rendering, transmission, compression and enhancement.

In high-performance professional audio and home theater applications, the C6713 DSP has the power to process both proprietary and industry-standard algorithms such as Dolby Digital, MPEG-2, MP3 and DTS, while also performing the adaptive acoustics analysis and optimisation required to create sonically accurate listening environments.

TI's new Fast C67x DSP run-time support library and chip support libraries are free and downloadable from the web and allow designers to develop applications quickly and easily.

The C67x DSP generation is supported by TI's eXpressDSP real-time software technology, including the Code Composer Studio v2 integrated development environment (IDE), the industry's most easy-to-use DSP IDE, and the DSP/BIOS real-time kernel.

The new DSPs are easy to program for high performance and low code size, especially with the use of the profile-based compiler (PBC).

While leveraging TI's industry leading C compiler performance, the profile-based compiler automates much of the trial-and-error work normally done by a developer in trying to find the best combination of build settings to get the right balance of code size and DSP performance.

The C6713 floating-point DSP, housed in either a 256-pin/27mm BGA or a 208-lead TQFP, will be available in sample quantities in the second quarter of 2002.

Designers can begin integrating the C6713 DSP into new product designs with a floating-point starter kit available today from TI at a suggested cost of $295.

The kit includes 16Mbyte of onboard SRAM, a parallel port interface to a host PC, TI's Code Composer Studio IDE, as well as expansion memory and peripheral connectors for daughter board support.

Available in the second quarter of 2002, the 225MHz C6713 DSP will be offered at a suggested cost of $26.85, the new 200MHz C6711 DSP will be offered at a suggested cost of $18.65, and the new 150MHz C6712 DSP at a suggested cost of $13.50, all in 10,000-piece quantities.
