International Rectifier has introduced an integrated design platform for sensorless control of permanent magnet motors. The new platform is the second in IR's family of iMotion application-specific design platforms for motion control in high-speed spindles and other machinery requiring precision control. The new integrated design platform comes with all hardware and software plus proven designs for the analogue and power stages.

The mixed-signal chip set is codesigned with the control algorithms to simplify design, slash overall manufacturing costs and drastically reduce time to market.

The IRMCS203 development system features the Accelerator configurable control engine technology using a proprietary sensorless algorithm that requires only DC bus voltage and phase current information to detect initial rotor position.

The IRMCO203 intellectual property (IP) library is a licensable object code featuring high starting torque and smooth ramp-up.

The IRMCO203 is targeted for low cost FPGA applications, eliminating the need for complicated programming processes.

The analogue section uses high-voltage ICs and the power stage is based on the latest non-punch-through (NPT) IGBT and PlugNDrive integrated power module technology.

For encoder-based high performance servo applications the IRMCS201 development system and IRMCO201 object code library are available that deliver a closed-loop torque control bandwidth greater than 5kHz, rivalling analogue bandwidth with digital flexibility.

David Tam, Vice President, Consumer and Industrial Sector Business, said: "High performance servos as well as low voltage and appliance motors can benefit from the innovative control architectures found in IR's evolving family of application-specific design platforms.

Our integrated design platform streamlines design cycles by integrating digital, analogue and power technologies".

International Rectifier's iMotion integrated design platform comprises a development system and mixed-signal chip set, which when codesigned together simplify motion control designs and bring energy-efficient, cost-effective solutions to market faster.

The IRMCS201 and IRMCS203 iMotion development systems come with all hardware and software integrated to achieve a design flow that requires no coding to configure the motor control algorithms and proven designs for analogue and power stages.

The development systems include 1kW servo amplifier hardware platform with preloaded code and ServoDesigner software.
