Connectors and cables join SAS mission
The Serial Attached SCSI interface is set to change the way storage devices are designed and operated, and Selectronix is aiming to provide a range of PCB connectors and cable assembly solutions
The impact of serial architecture on external storage has already been seen with the increasing popularity of SATA devices which serve as a mid-range complement to more expensive Fibre Channel disk drives. Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is the latest metamorphosis of the well-established, mission-critical data platform which delivers substantially more functionality than has ever been seen from the SCSI protocol.

Initially designed to operate at speeds of up to 3Gbps, the SAS interface extends drive addressing from 15 to 4032 per port.
The key factor in the success of Serial Attached SCSI is the common connector interface with SATA, allowing both high-reliability and lower cost-per-gigabyte devices to be incorporated in the same system.
SAS is designed to support three separate protocols, allowing it to interface seamlessly with SATA and dramatically changing the way storage systems will operate.
