Zero maintenance for
telecomms backup batteries

The Intensium 3 high-energy 48V lithium-ion battery system is designed for telecomms power backup applications

Saft has launched its new Intensium 3 high-energy 48V lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery system for telecomms power backup applications. The latest development in Saft's Intensium range of compact, modular, zero-maintenance industrial Li-ion battery solutions, Intensium 3 can deliver 2.2kWh of safe, reliable backup power in a standard 19in 3U rack-mounted, hot-pluggable unit.

With Intensium 3, Saft is opening up the potential applications for Li-ion technology to a wide spectrum of telecomms installations and system configurations by offering an advanced, high-energy, stand-alone, long-life, plug-and-play solution, built on existing Li-ion cells.

The Intensium 3 battery systems currently available to customers feature a volumetric energy density of 136Wh/litre, surpassing most advanced VRLA (valve regulated lead-acid) designs.

However, the Intensium concept offers considerable scope for further development.

This includes adapting the battery spatial architecture to meet specific applications, while the energy and power ratios can be further optimised to suit given telecomms requirements.

Saft has established a roadmap to increase the energy density of telecomms Li-ion battery systems to 200Wh/litre.

The compact nature of the Intensium 3 design has enabled a high-energy 48V, 2.2kWh, battery to be condensed into a self-contained module that occupies the height of three rack units (3U) within a standard 19in ETSI rack.

This approach means that, when installed, the battery can be handled just like any other plug and play rack-mount equipment, and offers unprecedented flexibility for plant design - with no need for a dedicated battery area in the cabinet, while its high temperature operating capability eliminates the need for an air conditioned environment.

Unlike conventional batteries, Intensium 3 requires no maintenance and is self-monitoring.

Intensium 3 modules comprise 14 of Saft's well-proven VL cylindrical Li-ion cells manufactured on established production lines in Bordeaux, France.

For maximum performance, life and safety, this advanced design Li-ion cell uses a nickel-based positive active material, doped with aluminium and cobalt.

Saft VL cells offer an ideal combination of light weight, small size, high-energy and operational reliability, with an extended lifetime even at high ambient temperatures - Intensium 3 has a projected 10-year life at +40C, a 20-year life at +20C and can operate at temperatures from -25 to +60C.

Intensium 3 is a plug and play battery system complete with integrated BPCU (battery protection and communication unit) fuse and power switch.

Visual indications such as LEDs and remote communication (CANbus, dry-contact) interfaces supply information on state of charge, state of health, alarm levels and operating conditions such as voltage and temperature.

Saft has optimised the Intensium 3 as a high-energy backup battery, capable of providing up to 2.2kWh of energy in the case of a mains power failure.

Intensium 3 is scalable, allowing it to grow as operating conditions change, with up to eight batteries connected in parallel to provide 18kWh of backup power.

The Intensium 3 design places a major emphasis on safety with a three-level redundant safety design in case of component failure or abusive conditions.

This includes an electronic board at the battery system level, a separate electronic board at the seven-cell pack level, and current breaking devices on every single cell. Request a free brochure from Saft Industrial Batteries....
