Milestone for smart card chip shipments
Renesas Technology has shipped its 500 millionth smart card chip to manufacturers around the world
The devices are all microprocessor-based chips that are used in a range of smart card applications, including GSM SIM and USIM cards, financial and other banking cards, and health and ID cards. The company is the world's number two smart card IC manufacturer having recorded a 20.3% growth in unit shipments over the last year.

Renesas is continuing to invest in its growing smart card business.
The company's manufacturing facility in Landshut, Germany is its worldwide production centre for smart card ICs and is working to reduce the cost of manufacture and make the production of smart card devices more efficient.
The company is also striving to meet the demands of the worldwide financial community since gaining a significant foothold in the banking market in 2002.
Renesas was recently awarded the Frost and Sullivan Global Competitive Strategy Award in recognition of the growth achieved by its smart card business during 2002.
The 500 million devices shipped are from the company's complete product range.
The AE (Advanced Engine) series covers all smart card applications with the full performance range of 8, 16 and 32bit CPUs with AE-3, AE-4 and AE-5 cores, respectively.
The latest devices are manufactured using a 0.18-micron CMOS process that allows a much higher integration of memory into a smart card and therefore enables high-end applications.
