PowerDsine has been selected by MGE UPS Systems to incorporate PoE midspans into its end-to-end backup solution for mission critical applications.

PowerDsine has been selected by MGE UPS Systems, a leading uninterruptible power supply (UPS) vendor, to incorporate PoE midspans into MGE's end-to-end backup solution for mission critical applications such as voice over IP, wireless LANs and network security cameras.

PoE is a technology provides the electrical power necessary for the operation of each end-device connected to the Ethernet network to be carried by data cables rather than by separate power cords.

It minimises the number of wires that must be used in order to install the network, resulting in lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation flexibility.

A UPS powering the network switches, when used in conjunction with a midspan ensures the supply of electrical operating power to end devices connected to the network, even during power outages.

The PowerDsine midspan deployed with the MGE UPS, includes remote power management capabilities that monitor, configure and regulate the supply of power to end-devices based on parameters established by the customer.

This feature, for example, can be set to shut down lower-priority network devices in an emergency, in order to conserve power and maintain the supply to critical VoIP phones.

"PowerDsine's midspan solution used in conjunction with a UPS, addresses problems that can arise with critical applications such as VoIP, wireless LAN access points (WLAN APs) and network security cameras during power failures", explains Igal Rotem, CEO of PowerDsine.

"The use of a PoE midspan together with a UPS provides a seamless service with close to no downtime in the event of a power failure".

IP phones backed up by a UPS system are easy to deploy, economical and reliable.

"By adding midspans to our portfolio, we can provide to our customers an equivalent level of availability of service from their VoIP architecture as they experience today with their traditional circuit switched system", confirms Patrick Brouhon, MGE's Enterprise Network Marketing Director.
