Netgear is using PowerDsine's IEEE802.3af compatible PD64004 PoE solution in its newly released ProSafe eight-port 10/100 desktop switch with four-port PoE.

Netgear is using PowerDsine's IEEE802.3af compatible PD64004 PoE solution in its newly released ProSafe eight-port 10/100 desktop switch with four-port PoE (FS108P).

Leveraging PowerDsine's PoE chip solution, the compact Netgear ProSafe switch now allows companies to optimise the installation of IP-based network devices, such as wireless access points and network-based video surveillance systems.

Typically, these devices need to be deployed in locations that are difficult to reach and as a result may not have the infrastructure necessary to provide electrical AC operating power.

For example, to achieve effective area coverage and radio reception, wireless access points are mounted above the ceiling plates where it is rare to find an AC outlet.

By PoE-enabling a network, network administrators no longer need to place these devices near AC power outlets or contract an electrician to install new power outlets, which can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavour.

Furthermore, a PoE-enabled Ethernet network deployed in conjunction with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can provide centralised back up for continued operation of a WLAN or network-based surveillance system during power outages.

"After evaluating PoE solutions from several vendors, we selected PowerDsine's PD64004 chip for a couple of reasons".

"First, PowerDsine's PD64004 chip offered a higher level of integration than its competitors, and therefore, made it easier to include PoE functionality in our compact ProSafe desktop switch", said Peter Newton, Product Line Manager at Netgear.

"Second, we have had good success with PowerDsine in our other PoE-enabled switch".

"Netgear is one of the leading switch manufacturers today and this cooperation highlights the importance of delivering highly integrated PoE solutions that enable companies like Netgear to deliver compact desktop switches that their customers want - especially those companies that adopt new Ethernet technologies like IP-based wireless access points and surveillance cameras", said Igal Rotem, CEO of PowerDsine.

"In addition, we are thrilled that Netgear is using PowerDsine's integrated PoE solutions exclusively in their power sourcing equipment".

Netgear's FS108P, featuring PowerDsine's PD64004 chip solution, is currently available.

In addition, Netgear's ProSafe 24-port 10/100 Layer 3 managed switch with two gigabit ports and PoE (FSM7326P) features PowerDsine PoE chips and has been shipping since Q1 of 2004.
