Segment drivers and display controllers enable manufacturers to drive multisegment EL displays and backlights
Pelikon, the Cardiff-based manufacturer of printed segmented electroluminescent (pSEL) displays, has unveiled the Pelikon Display Controller (PDC), capable of driving lively mobile phone keypad animation. With the Pelikon PDC, manufacturers can bring mobile phone keypads alive with new, visual 'ringtones' that can ripple and pulsate differently to each ringtone.
The PDC is also available in a variant designed for white goods such as fridges and microwaves, offering touch sensitive screens with complex animation capability.
Designed to be complementary to electroluminescent segmented displays including Pelikon's pSEL technology, the PDC is an easily integrated, high performance, low component count solution which provides a simple control interface in a low power, low noise, small footprint solution.
The PDC intelligently adapts to any electroluminescent display it is connected to, and is capable of changing the brightness of multiple segments.

At the same time, Pelikon's electronics are optimised to drive the phosphor in pSEL displays to achieve high brightness and long life.
'Mobile phone and appliance manufacturers are under constant pressure to deliver innovative products quickly, extend product lifecycles and at low cost', said Andrew Green, Product Manager, Pelikon.
'With our new PDC, Pelikon has stayed ahead of the pace of change, by offering a revolutionary approach to mobile phone keypads and other appliance electroluminescent display animation'.
'At the same time, its intelligent capabilities reduce valuable time spent on configuration and still manage to keep power consumption to a minimum'.
The PDC is available in two variants.
The mobile variant (PDC0642) supports 48 segments within a single electroluminescent screen and is no larger than alternative display controllers that are only capable of driving one segment displays.
The appliance solution, designed for white goods including fridges, (PDC0641) can control up to 96 segments within an electroluminescent display.
It also has an integrated capacitance wake-up function and lifetime extension.
Both variants are controlled via a standard I2C software interface and configure automatically for optimum drive conditions for any size of display.
