A new series of single-line bidirectional ESD protection diodesis designed to protect devices such as MP3 players and mobilephones from damage caused by ESD and other voltage inducedtransient pulses. Philips' new PESD5V0S1Bx series -including PESD5V0S1BL the smallest protection diode in theindustry - features excellent ESD clamping performance inultracompact packages. The devices consume minimal board space, providing design engineers with maximum design flexibility.Semiconductors are becoming smaller, denser and more complex, particularly in space-critical applications, thus increasing thetotal system's susceptibility to ESD pulses.

Withultracompact packaging and a low leakage current down to 5nA,Philips' new series of ESD protection diodes are ideal forapplications where board space and power consumption arecritical.

Featuring a low device capacitance of only 35pF, theESD protection diodes are also ideal for high frequencyapplications where too much protection device parasiticcapacitance causes unintentional signal distortion andmalfunction of the end application.

"ESD protection diodesare crucial for preventing damage to valuable electronic products- ranging from portable devices such as mobile phones to muchlarger devices like LCD TVs", said Rochus Kraehe, ProductMarketing Manager for Protection Diodes at PhilipsSemiconductors.

"Recognising this, Philips has expanded itsportfolio of ESD protection diodes to ensure that we continue tomeet our customers' size and performance needs".Philips' bidirectional ESD protection diodes are designed towithstand ESD pulses up to 30kV and fulfil industry standardIEC61000-4-2 (level 4), thus providing customers with superiorESD protection performance.

The new parts include thePESD5V0S1BL, available in the SOD882 surface mount package with afootprint of 1.0 x 0.6 x 0.5mm.

The other two parts in the seriesinclude the PESD5V0S1BA available in the SOD323 and thePESD5V0S1BB available in the SOD523.

Philips' new series ofESD protection diodes is available now.
