aid fail-safe ECU design
Philips has expanded its family of system basis chips (SBCs) designed for building fail-safe automotive electronic control units (ECUs)
These ECUs are embedded into Control Area Networks (CANs) and Local Interconnect Networks (LINs) to provide interfacing between the network and applications such as car windows, rain sensors and motor management. By introducing a range of integrated SBCs for CAN and LIN networks, Philips is providing car module makers with optimal re-use of software and ECU hardware for improved time to market and lower design costs.

With the increasing amount of electronics in the car, there is a clear trend towards more complex in-vehicle networks.
This poses new requirements on the fail-safe behaviour of the ECUs as a failure can not only block network communication and cause the connected applications to fail, but it can also cause the network to drain the car battery as the network relies on the battery once the ignition is turned off.
This is becoming increasingly important with the increasing number of ECUs that remain active after the ignition has been switched off.

Philips' family of SBCs help prevent failure of the ECU by integrating a fail-safe system controller that offers extensive diagnostic features, enabling rigorous error handling of any conceivable failure.
In case of a detected failure the ECU will be put in low-power mode and will become invisible to the network thereby not affecting the rest of the network.
The Philips SBC family will cover all CAN and LIN network applications, ranging from local electric window nodes to central engine management and dashboard applications.
The SBC family offers the choice between one or two physical layers, always in combination with the same system core, generic functions and fail-safe system, and always in the same small package.
This makes it easy and cost-effective for designers to substitute physical layers in ECUs, with maximum re-use of ECU hardware and software.
The Philips' SBCs are ready for the future by supporting 42V Powernet and by supporting the trend toward lower voltage microcontrollers.
Philips' SBC family includes the following devices: the UJA1061, an ISO11898-3 compliant fault-tolerant CAN and LIN2.0 compliant SBC; the UJA1065, and ISO11898-2 compliant high-speed CAN and LIN2.0 compliant SBC; the UJA1062, ISO11898-3 compliant fault-tolerant CAN SBC; the UJA1066, an ISO11898-2 compliant high-speed CAN SBC; and the UJA1069, a LIN2.0 compliant SBC.
The first product available in the SBC family will be the UJA1065.
