Rene Penning de Vries has been appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Philips' Semiconductor Division

In his new role, Penning de Vries will assume full responsibility for managing the CTO organisation of Philips Semiconductors. He will continue to report to Theo Claasen who has overall responsibility for technology within Philips Semiconductors, in combination with his role as strategy officer of Philips Semiconductors.

Penning de Vries' new role comes as part of the organisation's preparation for Claasen's retirement scheduled for mid 2005.

"With Rene Penning de Vries' commitment to our people and his impressive track record in technology development, we are confident that he will continue to build Philips' position as a leading provider of semiconductor solutions for connected consumer applications", said Scott McGregor, Chief Executive Officer, Philips Semiconductors.

Penning de Vries' 20-year tenure with the Philips organisation began in 1984 with Philips Research.

He joined Philips Semiconductors in 1987 and his achievements include the development of 1.0um CMOS logic and 0.8um CMOS in his first year with the company's semiconductor division.

In 1993, Penning de Vries was appointed Integration Specialist in Crolles.

In 1995 he was appointed as Process Integration Manager at the MOS4 fab in Nijmegen, which produces the high-speed, high-performance chips required in leading edge consumer product applications.

In 1999, Penning de Vries was appointed Vice President of Technology at Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company (SSMC), a wafer fab joint venture between Philips, TSMC and EDBI in Singapore.

Previous to taking up his new position, Penning de Vries was Deputy Chief Technology Officer with Philips Semiconductors.

"After more than 20 years in the electronics industry, I'm seeing a new era where customer understanding is becoming increasingly important".

"The winners in this industry will be organisations with solid customer intimacy programmes".

"My key challenge going forward will be to develop technologies in close partnership with the Philips Semiconductors organisation and our industry partners", said Penning de Vries.
