Philips is set to release its video/multimedia processing solution for smartphone handsets on the open market from early 2004 under the Nexperia semiconductor brand

This mobile multimedia processor is currently used in the P800 Smartphone of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. The mobile multimedia processor combines Philips' proven knowhow in SoC design and its expertise in media processing and connectivity. The Nexperia mobile multimedia processor is designed to support cellular multimedia functionality such as audio, video and connectivity applications.

The version used by Sony Ericsson's P800 is optimised to meet the company's requirements for its full-featured mobile multimedia products and reduces time-to-market for the products.

The multimedia processor also supports colour (touch) screens, built-in cameras, organiser functions, Bluetooth wireless technology and access to the Internet.

In addition, the Nexperia mobile multimedia processor is a proven Symbian-compliant solution.

"Working closely with such leading manufacturers for over 5 years, we've been able to provide them with optimised multimedia solutions, meeting their evolving requirements for a cost-effective method of powering high performance multimedia applications in a record time", commented Mario Rivas, Executive Vice President Communications Businesses from Philips Semiconductors.

"Seeing such multimedia-rich handsets from Sony Ericsson being so successful on the market, and featuring our multimedia processor, is a new proof-point of our mobile multimedia leadership.

And there are more to come with the next generation of Nexperia processors, supporting even greater levels of multimedia functionality".

Philips' Nexperia solutions provide a portfolio of reprogrammable and ready to integrate system and IC solutions for mobile-based multimedia applications.

These offer customers flexibility through extensive software IP libraries, which allow software upgrades to future-proof product designs and to provide a fast, low-risk and cost effective route to market.

Built on proven know-how in SoC design, the Nexperia mobile multimedia processor combines quality and high performance, thanks to Philips' expertise in media processing and connectivity including USB On-The-Go and Bluetooth.
