The P82CF201 is a single-chip dual fan manager that intelligently adjusts fan speed according to temperature using efficient pulsewidth modulation

The P82CF201 is a single-chip, dual fan manager that intelligently adjusts fan speed according to temperature using efficient pulsewidth modulation (PWM) rather than continuously running a system's fan at maximum speed. This frees the system processor from fan-control duties, improving overall system efficiency and reliability.

Designed to optimise fan efficiency, the P82CF201 is ideal for telecommunications, server and consumer applications especially where low noise levels and high reliability are very important.

This device enables designers to use two-wire fans, eliminating the need to purchase the more expensive three-wire fans, which results in a cost savings of 30%.

"The P82CF201 is another example of Philips' innovation to create solutions that solve our customer's design challenges", said David Whetstone, microcontroller Product Marketing Manager, Philips Semiconductors.

"The P82CF201 makes it easy and more cost efficient to add thermal management control for optimal fan operation and reinforces our technology leadership in providing essential multimarket semiconductors".

The P82CF201 offers flexible fan cooling configuration.

The customer can choose to start the fan at predetermined temperature or constantly cool the system at low noise and low fan speed.

Additionally, the fan speed increases linearly as system temperature rises, resulting in a reduction in system noise and an increase in the life of the fan.

Using a resistor to sense the fan presence, the P82CF201 detects the fan-fault condition and protects against fan failure during operation.

In addition, when one of the fans fail, the other fan will be turned to maximum speed, cooling the system while the failed fan gets replaced.

The devices have a built-in watchdog device that self-resets after the fault condition is cleared, avoiding a complete system reset.

The family of devices offers complete thermal protection in a variety of temperature-sensitive electronics, freeing system processors from fan control duties, thereby saving costs, and maximising overall system efficiency and reliability.

The P82CF201 is in volume sampling now.

Samples are available worldwide upon request.
