LCD controller takes interface onboard
The SAA6740 is the latest addition to the family of advanced thin-film-transistor (TFT)-LCD controllers from Royal Philips Electronics
This new semiconductor integrates a power-saving low-noise reduced swing differential signal (RSDS) panel interface on the chip. As a result, the SAA6740 reduces bus interconnects, power usage and EMI, and cuts overall system cost when compared with traditional TTL flat panels. With the inclusion of the RSDS interface, the SAA6740 controller is ideal for building more cost-effective LCD monitors.

"Philips continues its commitment to digital display innovation, leading the market in highly integrated system solutions", said Richard Lee, international product manager, Philips Semiconductors.
"With the addition of SAA6740 to our portfolio of LCD drivers and scalers, Philips is now the only company to announce a complete system solution for TFT-LCD displays and is one of the leading companies in the field of drivers and scalers for digital displays".
In addition to RSDS and TTL output signalling, the Philips controller integrates VGA and DVI inputs and a timing controller.
The SAA6740 allows design engineers to improve text readability and picture quality while reducing EMI and overall system cost.
To further reduce cost, design engineers can incorporate all of these features on to a two-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design, as opposed to the more expensive four-layer PCB used in previous LCD systems.
