Car radio chip
integrates more functions
Philips has paved the way for greater functionality to be brought into the car radio by integrating key functions and saving valuable space within the radio unit
The company's latest single-chip semiconductor solution - the TDA8587J - combines an integrated power amplifier and multiple-voltage regulator with a power switch, enabling other functions - such as an electrical power antenna, display unit or CD driver - to be incorporated into the radio unit.

Until now the power amplifier and regulator have been separate chips.
By incorporating multiple functions onto one chip valuable space can be saved, enabling OEMs to bring increased functionality into the car radio, shortening their manufacturing and design processes and thereby leading to quicker time to market.
By continuing to innovate with such traditional components, Philips is consolidating its number one worldwide position in analogue car radio ICs.

"Philips has realised a breakthrough in the field of car radio design with maximum integration of the high power-consumption function into one die for car radio", said Niko Veenstra, senior marketing manager for Car Infotainment Systems, Philips Semiconductors.
"The incorporation of all the radio functions into one chip affords our customers savings not only in space but also in cost, which for mass-market radios is determined by both the material and assembly cost".
The TDA8587J integrated power amplifier and stabiliser (IPAS) features three switchable regulators - 8.5, 5 and 3.3V - with low drop, low noise and warning output.
There is a standby regulator for the supply of the microcontroller.
The output is insensitive to short battery drops and features a proper start-up sequence with a delay capacitor and reset function.
It also has IPAS protection and a diagnostic option to protect the amplifier output stage from short circuits, which could irreparably damage the car radio.
The TDA8587J is capable of using a supply voltage between 8 and 18V.
