ON Semiconductor has expanded its LED power portfolio with the addition of two dual-output white LED drivers for handheld and consumer applications.

ON Semiconductor has expanded its LED power portfolio with the addition of two dual-output white LED drivers for handheld and consumer applications.

Offered in the tiny 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.55mm LLGA-12 package, the NCP5602 and NCP5612 are the industry's smallest dual output charge pumps for driving LCD display backlighting.

Each device achieves up to 87% peak efficiency with 0.2% LED-to-LED matching, thus assuring matched and consistent brightness.

The NCP5602 and NCP5612 have a built-in function that drives a low current through one of the two LEDs, allowing the clock display to be seen even in a dark environment.

This dimming mode eliminates the need for additional software programming and simplifies overall design.

To ensure safe operation without adding extra components, the NCP5602 and NCP5612 feature short-circuit and overvoltage protection.

"As LED technology and brightness improves, small handheld LCD displays will require fewer white LEDs for backlighting", said Hyung-Sup Kim, ON Semiconductor's Director for the Consumer Products Division.

"The new white LED drivers we are introducing are the smallest dual LED boost drivers on the market today".

"The fully protected and integrated NCP5602 and NCP5612 highlight ON Semiconductor's commitment to developing and delivering smaller, more functional devices for power management in portable devices".

The NCP5602 and NCP5612 are both offered in a lead-free (Pb-free) LLGA-12 package.

They are budgetary priced at US $0.60 per unit in 1000-unit quantities.
