Electronic Design and Application World has presented ON Semiconductor with a "best power management product" award for its NCP1653 fixed-frequency, current-mode PFC controller.

China's Electronic Design and Application World (EDAW) magazine has presented ON Semiconductor with a "best power management product" award for its NCP1653 fixed-frequency, current-mode power factor correction (PFC) controller.

This is the second consecutive year EDAW has awarded ON Semiconductor a "best product" win for a power management device.

The NCP1653 PFC controller is designed to efficiently drive continuous conduction mode (CCM) boost convertors with mid- to high-power needs (100W to 3kW).

In addition to the usual fixed-output voltage operation, it can operate with the output voltage tracking the input voltage, a feature called "follower boost".

Housed in a compact DIP-8 or SO-8 package, the NCP1653 includes many of the benefits found in more complex controllers: average current-mode or voltage-mode control, soft-start, VCC undervoltage lockout with hysteresis, undervoltage, overvoltage and overpower protection and thermal shutdown with hysteresis.

It is ideal for PFC in power supplies found in televisions, flat-screen monitors, PC desktop and notebook adapter SMPS, offline battery chargers and white goods such as refrigerators, washers and dryers.

"The only awarded PFC controller among all candidate products, the NCP1653 has many innovative features compared with previous PFC controllers in the industry", noted the expert judging panel.

"It does not need complex internal current circuits when it operates in CCM".

"With a simple 8-pin package, the NCP1653 minimises the external component count without sacrificing performance or flexibility".

"It also integrates all key protections including overvoltage, undervoltage, and thermal shutdown with hysteresis".

"The NCP1653 is the PFC controller of choice in desktop computer ATX power supply designs to meet the 80-plus efficiency initiative", said Hemen Cheng, ON Semiconductor Business Director of Analogue Products Group for Asia Pacific.

"Used to efficiently drive CCM step-up preconvertors, it represents a major leap toward compactness and ease of implementation".

"ON Semiconductor offers the widest range of PFC solutions in the industry, designed to meet the rapidly emerging efficiency goals and the input harmonic limits of IEC1000-3-2".

"To have the innovative NCP1653 recognised by an independent organisation like Electronic Design and Application World is a great testimonial to ON Semiconductor's leadership in power management".

The NCP1653 is priced at $0.66 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
