Novel package shrinks discrete devices

ON Semiconductor has introduced more than 50 small signal transistors and small signal diodes in a SOT-723 flat-lead package.

Responding to the portable product industry's need for further miniaturisation of discrete component packaging, ON Semiconductor has introduced more than 50 small signal transistors and small signal diodes in a SOT-723 flat-lead package.

This new package uses only 1.44mm2 of printed circuit board (PCB) area, improves the silicon-to-package ratio and delivers superior power dissipation performance.

"ON Semiconductor is leading the move to offer small signal devices in the SOT-723 package with one of the widest selections of technologies available", said Mamoon Rashid, ON Semiconductor General Manager for the Small Signal Division.

"For our customers, especially those in the portable products segment, these devices help them to offer the best combination of increased functionality, decreased size and greater power efficiency".

The discrete devices to be offered in the SOT-723 package include digital transistors, bipolar transistors, small signal Schottkys and small signal switching diodes.

With package dimensions of 1.2 x 1.2 x 0.5mm, the SOT-723 package helps free up much needed board space in cellphones, PDAs, digital still cameras, notebook computers and other applications.

compared with the industry's commonly used SOT-23 package, the SOT-723 delivers a footprint reduction of 84% and a profile improvement of 50%.

compared with standard gullwing packages, the flat-lead design of ON Semiconductor's SOT-723 devices results in up to a 20% improvement in power dissipation and up to 12% improvement in thermal resistance (Theta J-A).

This delivers superior heat dissipation performance per unit of board area.

The devices are priced between $0.016 and $0.04 per unit in quantities of 10,000 units.
