A new family of SiGe-based, high-bandwidth, fully differential clock distribution, clock driving, clock multiplexing and clock prescaling ICs support current mode logic (CML) output.

Applying decades of expertise in high-speed clock and data management to the networking and telecommunications markets, ON Semiconductor has released the NB7L11M, NB7L14M, NB7L86M, NBSG16M, and NB7N017M - silicon germanium (SiGe) based, high-bandwidth, fully differential clock distribution, clock driving, clock multiplexing, and clock prescaling ICs that support current mode logic (CML) output.

The devices are the newest members of the company's GigaComm family of high-performance clock and data management ICs designed for the telecommunications, networking, high-end computing and automated test equipment industries.

"As designers migrate from simple CMOS solutions to the performance range dominated by bipolar ics, current-mode logic is one of the most convenient protocols for high-speed interfacing and is quickly becoming the protocol of choice for emerging, high-bandwidth, networking applications", said Mike Radhanauth, ON Semiconductor Director of Marketing and Business Development for High Frequency Products.

The new GigaComm devices simplify initial conditions and connection termination with on-chip 50ohm input and output termination.

This allows for a point-to-point implementation expected of CMOS solutions, but uncommon in bipolar designs.

Like reduced swing ECL (RSECL), the small 400mV signal swing of CML results in reduced power consumption and rise/fall times.

The irregularities that result from back reflection of signals later in the circuit - which is common to high-frequency signalling - are minimised by the on-chip termination.

Capable of datarates above 12Gbit/s in some cases, these devices are ideal for high-performance applications in OC-192 applications.

High-speed backplane interfacing is a breeze with propagation delay below 150ps and rise and fall times below 53ps.

Combined with the design flexibility inherent in CML, the performance capability of the NBSG16M results in an optimum solution for data transmission in networking applications.

The NB7L11M is a 12Gbit/s, 8GHz, 2.5 or 3.3V SiGe differential clock driver that reproduces the input clock signal in the form of two identical CML output signals.

In 16-pin QFN, it is priced at $25.20 per unit in 1000 unit quantities.

The NB7L14M is a 12 Gbit/s, 8GHz, 2.5 or 3.3V SiGe differential clock driver with a 1:4 fanout and CML outputs.

In a 16-pin QFN, it is priced at $30.24 per unit in 1000 unit quantities.

The NBSG16M is a 10Gbit/s, 10GHz, 2.5 or 3.3V SiGe differential receiver/driver with CML outputs.

In a 16-pin QFN, it is priced at $20.59 per unit in 1000 unit quantities.

The NB7L86M is a 12Gbit/s, 8GHz, 2.5 or 3.3V SiGe differential smart gate with CML outputs.

It offers programmable flexibility to choose between AND/NAND, OR/NOR, XOR/XNOR or 2:1 multiplexing capabilities.

It offers all of the primary logic functions at breakneck speeds for high-performance applications.

In a 16-pin QFN, it is priced at $13.95 per unit in 1000 unit quantities.

The NB7N017M is a 3.3V dual 8bit modulus, divider/prescaler with CML outputs, capable of switching at speed greater than 3.5GHz.

In a 52-pin QFN, it is priced at $23.26 per unit in 1000 unit quantities.

Like all members of the GigaComm family, these devices feature ON Semiconductor's AnyLevel technology which includes 50ohm input termination resistors and accepts all major signalling standards - specifically negative ECL (LVNECL), PECL, LVCMOS/LVTTL, CML or LVDS.

Evaluation and demonstration boards are available for all GigaComm devices.

All the devices are also available in wafer form to offer additional design flexibility.
