China's Electronic Design and Application World (EDAW) magazine has presented ON Semiconductor with a "best product design" award in power management for its NCP5331 two-phase pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controller. The NCP5331 controller is designed for low voltage, high current power supplies including video graphics cards, telecom systems and other DC/DC applications. It meets the demanding power delivery specifications of the AMD Opteron processor - and can help eliminate the board design complications and prohibitive expense of transitioning to 64bit computing.
When used in combination, the NCP5331 and ON Semiconductor's latest fast-switching, low-on-resistance power MOSFETs provide a highly reliable and cost effective power management system.
"The NCP5331 was designed to deliver the fastest transient response, reduce output voltage jitter, provide greater design flexibility and portability and minimise overall solution cost", said Andy Buk, ON Semiconductor Marketing Manager for Power Switching Products in Asia/Pacific.
"To have this innovative device recognised by an independent organisation like Electronic Design and Application World and voted 'best product design' is truly gratifying".
EDAW - one of China's leading electronics industry trade publications - launched its first annual awards programme this year for power products introduced in 2003.
The "best product design" awards were selected by voters online at the EDAW website.
In all, there were seven product categories including power management.
The magazine - which incorporates Nikkei Electronics China - is jointly published by the Chinese Science Technology Information Institute and US-based IDG.
It has a technical orientation with a strong focus on designs and applications.
The monthly magazine covers four major market sectors: communications and computers, automation and measurement, embedded systems and power supply technology.
The NCP5331 two-phase buck controller features internal gate drivers ideally suited for generating low-voltage, high-current outputs.
The enhanced V2 control methodology, adjustable switching frequency of up to 600kHz and 0.8% precision reference are a few of the features that help designers minimise overall design solutions without compromising performance.
The device features a unique overvoltage protection scheme, ensuring the best industry protection for the central processing unit (CPU) under all possible overvoltage situations.
It uses the 5V standby rail to provide 100% protection.
The most difficult overvoltage situation is when an upper FET is shorted and the supply is powered up.
The NCP5331 takes advantage of the 5V standby rail to ensure that the CPU will never be damaged - even with repeated power-up attempts.
The high level of integration of the NCP5331 simplifies power supply implementation, and ON Semiconductor's controller architecture provides fast transient response thus minimising the number of output capacitors required.
The device's lossless inductor current sensing enables precise current sensing without expensive additional components.
Output voltage is set by a highly accurate 5bit DAC - programmable from 0.8 to 1.55V.
The NCP5331 seamlessly supports the requirement for voltage ID shift on the fly, allowing the processor to change the output voltage of the controller without creating any out-of-spec glitches.
Delivering a solution size that is smaller than competing offerings, the NCP5331 is housed in a 7 x 7mm 32-lead QFP package that effectively conserves board space.
It is priced at $1.97 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.
