The NBSG72A is a silicon germanium (SiGe) based high-bandwidth fully differential crosspoint switch with output level select capabilities.

The NBSG72A is a silicon germanium (SiGe) based high-bandwidth fully differential crosspoint switch with output level select capabilities.

The device is the newest member of the company's GigaComm family of high-performance logic ICs designed for the telecommunications, networking and automated test equipment industries.

Operating at speeds above 7GHz, the NBSG72A is the industry's fastest PECL crosspoint switch and ideal for high performance applications at OC-48 and OC-96 speeds of 2.5 and 5Gbit/s, respectively.

Propagation delay is typically 140ps with rise times of 50ps and fall times of 45ps.

The end result is an output signal that significantly improves timing margins over other solutions.

"The PECL performance of the NBSG72A is unparalleled in the industry and represents an entirely new functional class of devices for ON Semiconductor's GigaComm family", said Bill Schromm, ON Semiconductor Vice President and Director Clock and Data Management Products.

"Competitive devices currently available are only available in low voltage differential signalling (LVDS) or current-mode logic (CML)".

The NBSG72A features two inputs either of which can be routed directly, multiplexed to one or two outputs or fanned-out to both - via the single-ended control pins that accept low voltage ECL (LVECL) or low voltage CMOS (LVCMOS) and transistor-transistor logic (TTL).

The versatility of the device enables a myriad of application possibilities.

In addition to routing reference clocks to different serdes/framers that use multirate devices, it can be implemented as a fan-out buffer, a serial digital video router, automatic protection switch or it can provide fast failure management by switching to alternative clock and data signals in a given system.

The output level select feature of the NBSG72A offers programmability to the output signal peak-to-peak amplitude from 0 to 800mV in five discrete steps.

This ensures the lowest possible electromagnetic interference, crosstalk and system noise.

Like all members of the GigaComm family, this device features ON Semiconductor's AnyLevel technology.

AnyLevel includes 50ohm input termination resistors and accepts all major signalling standards - specifically negative ECL (NECL), PECL, LVCMOS/LVTTL, CML or LVDS.

The NBSG72A is packaged in the 3 x 3mm 16-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) - offering a minimum impact to board space and industrial-grade temperature tolerance (-40 to +85C).

It is priced at $11.13 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
