When it came to choice of materials for the front panels of Drake's Refresh Range of voice communication modules, rigid polyurethane offered the ability to cope with shape without compromising cost

The excellent fluidity of polyurethane at casting enables complex three-dimensional patterns to be formed to near net shape with minimum draft angles allowing the artistic designer the freedom to express style without concession t the technical necessities. Drake Electronics enjoys an enviable reputation as a market leader in the supply of voice communication systems in broadcast, air traffic control and simulation training which demand the very highest of quality.

A combination of the modern design and manufacturing facility, and experience with rigid polyurethane at Norse Precision Castings enables intricate design concepts to be realised.

Techniques at Norse Precision Castings allow wall thickness from 1 to 30mm.

and tolerances as low as +0.3mm, producing parts requiring little or no secondary operations.

Also, strengthening ribs can be added easily, giving the designed the luxury of putting material only where it is needed, with metal inserts for threads.

Polyurethane demonstrates a high degree of accuracy on slots accommodating the alphanumeric display with low warp characteristics and coped well with the intricate hole patterns.

Variations in colour are easily achieved as polyurethane can be painted to give an attractive surface finish.

Of prime consideration was the low-cost tooling, capable of supplying several thousand components, which enable low quantity batch sizes necessitated by the variants to be produced economically.

These benefits come without the loss of the commercial advantage of plastics.
