Rigid polyurethane is a versatile modern plastic capable of producing complex shapes for panels, chassis, enclosures and housings, and is economical enough even in low quantities to allow individual needs to be accomplished. Most plastics are thermally formed, but of those cured by chemical reaction a few, such as rigid polyurethane, are set without heat, resulting in additional design benefits particularly for the electronics industries.

Before setting the material is highly fluid, giving exceptional ability to mould complex three dimensional patterns to near net shape, with minimum draft angles, often zero.

The absence of high temperatures in the process allows more delicate items such as electronic packages, connectors, and coaxial components, where it is necessary to retain shape and form to be encapsulated without risk of damage.

This excellent fluidity also allows thin irregular shaped surface indentations for metallic shields, for EMI/RFI attenuation, or logos, labels and badges to be incorporated.

The polyol resin is mixed with an isocyanate hardener and fed to accurate wooden moulds where curing takes place at room temperature within the hour.

Moulding techniques at Norse Precision Castings allow wall thickness from 1 to 30mm with tolerances as low as +0.3mm, producing parts requiring little or no secondary processing.

Also strengthening ribs can be added easily in recognised areas of stress, giving the designer the luxury of putting the material only where it is needed.

Norse Precision Castings runs the process in parallel with its aluminium sand casting operation, cross fertilising skills as many are common to both.

The precision finishing shop is used for post-moulding work where tighter tolerances are needed on the rigid polyurethane which machines well.

The benefits of polyurethane come without the loss of the commercial advantage of plastic, and low cost tooling is capable of supplying several thousand components with considerable life duty.
