National Semiconductor has added two new frequency synthesisers to its PLLatinum line of phase locked loops (PLLs) for wireless infrastructure applications.

National Semiconductor has added two new frequency synthesisers to its PLLatinum line of phase locked loops (PLLs) for wireless infrastructure applications The LMX2346 and LMX2347 are National's next generation of fixed radio PLLs and are pin- and software-compatible with current LMX2323 PLLs, providing easy upgrade

The LMX2346 and LMX2347 feature very low phase noise for increased radio sensitivity, allowing fewer dropped calls, extended basestation range and improved voice quality.

In addition, low power performance and small chip scale packaging make the PLLs ideal for use in 2, 2.5, 3G and future mobile telephone infrastructure equipment including base stations, WLANs and other wireless communications systems.

"With the LMX2346 and LMX2347, system designers can better maximise the performance of wireless applications.

These PLLs are designed to operate in space constrained designs, while minimising noise for improved radio sensitivity", said Armin Konrad, technical marketing engineer for National's RF Building Blocks in Europe.

"As system designers pack more functionality and equipment into existing space, product designs like the LMX2346 and LMX2347 - that combine high performance low noise capability with a small footprint - are increasingly important to the overall performance of the end product".

LMX2346 and LMX2347 are high performance frequency synthesizers that offer all the features of National's PLLatinum product line.

The LMX2346 and LMX2347 are manufactured using National's advanced BiCMOS process.

Employing a proprietary digital phase locked loop technique, the PLLs generate very stable, low noise control signals for UHF and VHF voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs).

Both PLLs feature low phase noise of -91dBc/Hz at 900MHz and -85dBc/Hz at 1960MHz, which enables better radio sensitivity.

Other features that help system designers improve phase noise performance are a charge pump power supply voltage of up to 6V, allowing the use of low gain VCOs; a selectable oscillator input buffer mode that minimizes buffer noise current; and the support of higher reference frequencies up to 104MHz.

In addition, the LMX2346 and LMX2347 operate at frequencies up to 2.0GHz and 2.5GHz, respectively, and offer 2.7V to 5.5V operation, low current consumption of 6.5mA and digital lock detect.

The LMX2346 and LMX2347 are available in both CSP-16 and TSSOP-16 packages and priced starting at $2.05 and $2.50, respectively.

All prices are in 1000-unit quantities.

LMX2346 and LMX2347 are featured in National's Webench - EasyPLL interactive simulation tools, the online design environment that enables engineers to design and simulate PLL and loop filter circuit designs.
