Metrowerks reckons it has simplified and accelerated application development for Motorola systems containing the PowerPC instruction set architecture (ISA) with the release of CodeWarrior Development Studio, PowerPC ISA Edition for Communications Processors, Version 8.
The offering provides a highly visual and fully integrated tool set to accelerate development of complex applications for networks, home gateways and process automation devices.
CodeWarrior Development Studio, PowerPC ISA Edition for Communications Processors, Version 8, supports the entire embedded development process including platform creation, application development, and performance tuning, as well as hardware bring-up, OS bring-up and driver support.
Version 8 is RTOS agnostic and runs on a broad range of IT infrastructures by offering host environments for both Microsoft Windows and Sun Solaris workstations.
The product also features a common project management system to provide a consistent look and feel for hardware and software application development, which eases process interaction between hardware engineers and application developers.
Developers interested in evaluating future Motorola processors containing PowerPC cores to address complexity and computing application needs can now benchmark, test and debug current application code by downloading applications to the PowerPC target via the studio's PowerTap Pro and WireTap on-chip debug products.
This feature allows users to conduct processor system tests, debug and integrate applications to evaluate performance improvements and address code compatibility issues prior to investing in new hardware platforms.
"Our close affiliation with Motorola helps Metrowerks deliver software and hardware products that are fully compatible with emerging Motorola silicon.
This allows our customers stay one step ahead of their competition by helping them quickly deliver more robust applications to market", said Calvin Harrison, NetComm Marketing Director, Metrowerks.
"Metrowerks has been delivering software tools and evaluation hardware for PowerPC ISA customers for several years, and with the release of Version 8, Metrowerks continues to help developers solve challenges associated with complex silicon architectures".
Version 8 includes advanced features and capabilities such as cache visibility to view and modify cache contents, hardware diagnostics to test boards simultaneously, a logic analyser interface to run advanced trace sequences, an enhanced interface for Flash programming and configuration, and editor features for formatting code in real time.
Version 8 is also compatible with the Metrowerks CodeTest Software Analysis Tools, which are designed to demonstrate standards compliance, improve overall software quality and reduce development costs.
Key features and benefits of CodeWarrior Development Studio, PowerPC ISA Edition for Communications Processors, Version 8, include: support for the entire family of Motorola processors containing the PowerPC core, including PPC60x, MPC7xx, MPC8xx, MPC74xx and MPC82xx; CodeWarrior turbocharged debugger for viewing breakpoints, memory window, binary editor, low-level trace, processor cache analysis and flash programming capabilities; OS bring-up and driver development including the CodeWarrior III C/C++ compilers and gcc3.x compiler; CodeWarrior kernel-level debugger for on-chip debugging and connectivity capabilities to the PowerTap Pro run control system; Platform Creation Suite development tools with point-and-click capabilities, and advanced tools for importing and exporting; and a C-aware text editor, improved threading and dialog location/replacement capabilities.
CodeWarrior Development Studio, PowerPC ISA Edition for Communications Processors, Version 8, is available immediately, and may be purchased directly from Metrowerks.
Suggested retail price is Eur 7040 per licence and includes one year of technical support and maintenance.
