Regulators save portable power and space
Buck regulators smoothly transition into pulse skipping mode under light loads, reducing the switching frequency to improve power efficiency and provide long battery life.
To help design engineers bring power-efficient small-form-factor portable products to market, Freescale Semiconductor has added the MC34726/27 DC/DC buck regulators to its analogue portfolio optimised for space-constrained battery-powered applications Manufactured with Freescale's SmartMOS technology, the MC34726/27 devices are designed to enhance efficiencies at light loads and to improve standby time in mobile applications where Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries are the main power source

At light output loads in standard buck convertors, most energy losses become switching losses.
Using Freescale's Z-mode architecture during light output activities such as cellphone standby, the MC34726/27 buck regulators smoothly transition into a pulse skipping mode, reducing the switching frequency to improve power efficiency and provide long battery life.
Z-mode architecture is engineered to improve ripple performance during light load currents, while maintaining a low quiescent current.
The ultrasmall 2 x 2 x 0.65mm package and high operating frequency design of the MC34726/27 requires little board real estate and enables a small form factor design.
The devices are intended for applications with tight board space requirements and single cell Li-ion-based applications, such as cellphones, PMP and MP3 players.
MC34726/27 device samples are available now.
Suggested resale pricing for the MC34726 in 10,000-piece quantities is US $0.51, and the MC34727 in 10,000-piece quantities is $0.53.
