Eastern Communications (Eastcom), China's largest manufacturer of cellular telephones, is to use Motorola's i.250 Innovative Convergence (2.5G) platform

Eastern Communications (Eastcom), China's largest manufacturer and supplier of cellular mobile telephones and systems equipment, is to use Motorola's i.250 Innovative Convergence (2.5G) platform to develop state-of-the-art cellular phones. A comprehensive silicon-to-software solution, the i.250 platform is designed to enable the company to quickly get to market with smart, Eastcom-branded 2.5G wireless communication products.

The collaboration, which is an expansion of a decade of co-operation between Eastcom and Motorola, represents a milestone in Eastcom's ongoing strategy to provide anytime, anywhere communication for consumers in China, where wireless subscribers are expected to top 320 million by 2004.

"The i.250 platform dramatically boosts our ability to offer affordable, connected, up-to-date cellular capabilities to an increasingly sophisticated consumer base", said Shi Jixing, chairman of the board at Eastcom.

"In China, Eastcom has long been at the forefront of new research, development, and technology innovation for cellular phones.

For more than a decade, we've collaborated with Motorola to advance a wide range of mobile communication solutions, including analogue cellular, GSM cellular phones, base stations and more.

The i.250 platform enables Eastcom to quickly bring high-speed mobile data services and 2.5G handsets to this dynamic market".

"Eastcom is the largest manufacturer and supplier of cellular mobile telephones and systems equipment in China, and they chose our i.250 platform because it reduces system cost and design and development time.

The i.250 platform enables Eastcom to rapidly develop high-performing wireless communication products that take advantage of the industry's most highly integrated 2.5G solution", said Pete Shinyeda, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Wireless and Broadband Systems Group.

"We look forward to advancing our long-standing relationship with Eastcom to provide next-generation technology that will help improve China's wireless communication industry and deliver compelling, Internet-enabled mobile consumer products".

The i.250 Innovative Convergence total system solution will allow Eastcom to concentrate on product differentiation, branding, upgrading and style for the new phones.

This can enable the Hangzhou City-based manufacturer, which neighbours Shanghai, to take full advantage of an emerging trend in China: the rising popularity of domestic brands of electronic communication products.

"With the i.250 platform, we acquire silicon and other core components for quickly crafting low-cost, high-quality phones", said Shi.

"That leaves our engineers free to devise stylish, attractive packaging that will appeal to today's consumers - while also advancing the Eastcom brand.

In addition, we will provide modules and ODM and OEM product platforms for our major shareholding company, China Putian Corporation, the leader of China's Top 100 Electronic Information Enterprises, its business partners and member companies of the China handset manufacturers Alliance".
