The new MP2351, a 1.45MHz monolithic step down switch mode convertor from Monolithic Power Systems (MPS), achieves 2A continuous output current over a wide input supply range with excellent load and line regulation, yet is packaged in a small 3 x 3mm QFN or 10-pin MSOP. Featuring a built in internal power MOSFET, the MP2351 requires only a minimum number of readily available standard external components. The high frequency operation allows the external ceramic capacitor and inductor to be very small, accommodating space constrained designs.
Current mode operation provides fast transient response and eases loop stabilisation.
The 1.45MHz fixed frequency device is up to 95% efficient, and has a wide operating input range of 4.75 to 23V.
Output is adjustable from 1.22 to 16V.
Fault condition protection includes cyclebycycle current limiting and thermal shutdown.
In shutdown mode the regulator draws 23uA of supply current.
The MP2351 is targeted at DSL and cable modems, hard disk drives, set-top boxes, battery chargers and as the preregulator for linear regulators.
High frequency switching allows for very small LC filtering components that attenuate ripple noise on the input or output of the regulator.
An evaluation board is available.
