Phase shifters for phased array antennas
A new research contract from the US Army entails the development of low-cost MEMS phase shifters for phased array antennas
The contract is for the first phase of a Small Business Innovation Research project sponsored by the Department of Defense. This program's focus is on developing innovative microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices and circuits which uniquely support the requirements for tunable filters in transmit applications.
This six month contract will provide advances in the design of MEMS switches and circuits necessary for constructing MEMS-based tunable filters for use in military transmitter applications.
Currently, most MEMS switches are designed for power levels on the order of 1 or 2W.
Improvements in the mechanical and electrical design of these switches will improve the current and voltage handling capability such that tens of watts can be effectively handled.

Mouser's expertise complements Avago's aggression
Mouser Electronics has signed a distribution agreement to distribute analogue, mixed-signal and optoelectronic components from Avago Technologies
The target application for these switches is agile, electronically tuned filters.
Teamed with Memtronics on this project is Engineering Tecknowledgey Applications (ETA), a Fairfax, Virginia-based engineering consulting firm.
ETA will support development of software-defined radio architectures which meet upcoming MDA needs.
ETA and Memtronics will collaborate to flowing down radio requirements and developing circuits which provide new levels of performance.
These radio and filter architectures will be used to help prevent co-site interference of multiple transmitters in close proximity.
These developments have a broad range of applicability, especially on unmanned air vehicles, where multiple transmitters and receivers are operating simultaneously.
