Hybrid chokes have both modes covered
A new range of hybrid choke coils combines common-mode and differential-mode suppression in a single component, saving both board space and bill of materials costs

Battery deal adds backup capabilities
Micromark C and CD has signed a distribution agreement with EnerSys Europe, a division of the world's number one supplier of rechargeable valve regulated lead acid batteries
The range includes 20 components to serve a broad range of system requirements, with common-mode inductance values ranging from 0.49 to 9.3mH. High differential inductance variants are also available. The Murata PLY17 series is being promoted by Micromark C and CD in the UK. It allows designers to ensure compliance with specifications for conducted noise and radiated noise with a single component.
This is important as higher operating frequencies and clock speeds generate increased radiated noise, which must be suppressed to meet international regulations.
Until now, this has required an additional differential-mode choke alongside the common-mode choke normally provided to suppress conducted noise.
As well as combining differential and common-mode chokes in a single package, the PLY17 series also features a patented winding technique to enhance noise suppression performance above 30MHz.

Ferrites and filters combine and protect
New ferrite beads offering high impedance in the gigahertz range address the issue of HF noise in miniature portable applications such as handsets
The PLY17 series will provide enhanced noise suppression in power supplies for computing, audio and presentation equipment, flat panel displays, IDTVs, web pads and other domestic digital electrical appliances, as well as lighting ballasts and inverters.
The new hybrid choke coils combine both functions into a footprint of 24.5 x 22.5mm, and feature a 12.5mm profile to further aid miniaturisation for many end-user appliances.
The devices are suitable for through-hole mounting, with four pins spaced at 15 x 12.5mm.
Maximum rated current is 0.6A for 9.3mH common-mode inductance, increasing to 2.4A for 0.49mH, and 3.0A for 1.0mH.
Insertion loss for PLY17 series chokes is around 20dB at 100MHz.
