Infineon puts core to VoIP duties
MIPS Technologies' 32bit 4Kc core has been licensed by Infineon Technologies for development of advanced communications systems targeting the IP phone market
The agreement brings together Infineon's expertise in advanced integrated circuit design and the performance attributes of the MIPS architecture, setting new standards of security and performance for VoIP systems. Infineon's single-chip solution for VoIP telephones, the INCA-IP, is the newest member of its Advance Telephony product family for digital telephones.

The MIPS-based INCA-IP chip raises the performance standard of VoIP systems by being the first VoIP system chip to integrate hardware-accelerated encryption, enabling advanced network security support.
Furthermore, the INCA-IP IC establishes a platform for IP phone manufacturers by providing functionality such as high voice quality, integrated conferencing and hands-free operation.
The first publicly announced design win is with Siemens ICN, a leading provider of real time communications solutions for telecommunications and business markets.
Siemens cited the INCA-IP's flexibility, advanced feature set, and ability to reduce total system cost as the basis for its inclusion in future IP telephony product lines.
"MIPS cores provide proven performance, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and a broad base of third-party development tools, making the 4Kc core a natural choice for our on-board processor", said Christian Wolff, Vice President of Infineon's wireline communications business group and general manager of the access business unit.
"An additional factor in our decision was our ongoing software investment in the MIPS architecture, leveraging our design work with the 5Kc core, the basis of our EasyPort broadband communications controller".
"The high-performance aspects of our industry-standard architecture enables industry leaders, such as Infineon, to develop innovative products that address the complex security concerns of the VoIP market", said Jack Browne, Vice President of Worldwide Sales at MIPS Technologies.
"With the addition of the 4Kc to their portfolio of MIPS cores, Infineon now has access to the full range, 32 to 64bit, of MIPS' performance capabilities and benefits from utilising the same third-party tools set".
