The conduction-cooled 800MHz 7447A 6U VME Multicomputer is billed as the most powerful commercial off-the-shelf multiprocessing system available today for deployment in extreme environments

Launched at the Military Embedded Electronics and Computer Conference, Mercury Computer Systems reckons its conduction-cooled 800MHz 7447A 6U VME Multicomputer is the most powerful commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) multiprocessing system available today for deployment in extreme environments. The conduction-cooled Multicomputer can scale up to 72 PowerPC 7447A compute nodes connected by the high-bandwidth Mercury Race++ Series communications fabric, for a total of 460GFLOPS in processing power.

Conduction-cooled board and system solutions meet Mercury's Level 3 environmental specifications, which are intended for harsh operating environments that include extreme heat or cold, humidity, shock and vibration, little or no airflow, and dirty or corrosive atmospheres.

'The 800MHz 7447A compute node (CN) daughtercard is the latest in a series of seamless performance enhancements to Mercury's 6U VME conduction-cooled Multicomputer', said Eran Strod, Director of Product Marketing for Defense Electronics at Mercury.

'Mercury can now deliver about 0.5TFLOPS in a conduction-cooled 6U chassis'.

'Furthermore, Mercury will continue to lead the industry in scaling processing performance, embracing next-generation fabric architectures, and supporting a wide array of form factors applied to both air- and conduction- and even liquid-cooled application spaces'.

'Rugged COTS applications should get a huge boost in performance if migrated to high-gigahertz processors on future Mercury VITA 46/48 platforms'.

Conduction-cooled products from Mercury are functionally identical to existing rugged- and commercial-grade Race++ VME products.

As an integral part of the Race++ family, they are fully supported by the Race++ software environment for both development and deployment.

Signal and image processing applications can now move smoothly from lab environments to deployment in extreme conditions, all within the Race++ family.

Each conduction-cooled module consists of an MCJ6 motherboard with either one or two daughtercards.

A processing daughtercard supports two compute nodes (CNs), each consisting of a PowerPC 7447A microprocessor with AltiVec technology, fast on-chip Level 2 (L2) cache, double datarate (DDR) SDRAM, and a Mercury-designed CN interface chip.

The 800MHz CN daughtercards use HCTE (high coefficient of thermal expansion) PowerPCs, which greatly increase the tolerance to thermal expansion and contraction stress as a result of temperature cycling.

High-speed front panel data port (FPDP) I/O daughtercards may also be configured onto an MCJ6 motherboard with a processing daughtercard.

Board-to-board communication takes place through Race++ Series interlink modules.

These components form the backbone of a Race++ switch fabric, supporting multiple high-speed data transfers simultaneously through multiple pathways.

The conduction-cooled 800MHz 7447A Multicomputer is currently available for customer shipments within standard lead times.
