STMicroelectronics (ST) has adopted Mentor's IBIS (Input/Output Buffer Information Specification) model development flow for the complete set of I/O pads in its HCMOS8 0.18-micron IC library, and its HCMOS9 0.13-micron process library. ST will now be able to provide Mentor Graphics qualityIBIS models directly to its customers, for use in the design of high-speed digital PCBs. "IBIS models are now part of the ST standard offering for our 0.18 and 0.13-micron CMOS processes for I/O pads.

ST chose the Mentor Graphics ICX high-speed simulation tool to validate the IBIS libraries because of the accuracy, completeness and reliability of ICX for creating IBIS models", said Guy Mabboux, I/O library manager CR and D, STMicroelectronics.

"By adopting Mentor's solution for IBIS model generation and by using Mentor's Eldo for Spice model simulation, we are able to provide end users complementary options at the chip and board level".

IBIS is a data specification that describes the input and output buffer of an IC and is used to model how the buffer interacts electrically with the circuit board.

IBIS is an international standard of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) supported by the EIA IBIS Open Forum, and is used by most IC manufacturers to communicate pin functionality and electrical behavior.

The IBIS data format allows IC vendors to protect the intellectual property related to their manufacturing processes, which is typically disclosed in a Spice model.

Mentor Graphics has consistently supported the EIA IBIS Open Forum and Bob Ross, a Mentor Graphics engineer specialising in IBIS-related issues, is currently serving as the organisation's vice chair.

As part of Mentor's ICX signal integrity analysis and verification solution, Mentor offers validated qualityIBIS models.

"ST's adoption of Mentor Graphics qualityIBIS model development flow represents the culmination of our collaboration over the past year", said Henry Potts, general manager and vice president, systems design division, Mentor Graphics.

"This will allow the end user to design high-speed boards with first pass success".
