Battery-pack supervisor squeezes in intelligence
The MAX1781 battery-pack supervisor integrates a microcontroller core, program memory, a Coulomb-counter-based fuel gauge, a multichannel data-acquisition unit and a master/slave SMBus interface
The MAX1781 is a programmable, smart battery-pack supervisor that integrates a microcontroller core, program memory, a Coulomb-counter-based fuel gauge, a multichannel data-acquisition unit, and a master/slave SMBus interface. The 8bit, RISC microcontroller core is user-programmable and provides battery-pack designers with complete flexibility for developing fuel gauging and control algorithms.

The data-acquisition unit can measure individual cell voltages to within 25mV, total battery-stack voltage (up to 20.48V), and internal/external chip temperature.
Combined with user-adjustable overcurrent comparators, these features allow the MAX1781 to eliminate a separate primary-pack protection IC.
This controller is a high-voltage IC that can directly connect to two- to four-series lithium-ion (Li+) cells and supply itself through a fully integrated 3.4V low-dropout linear regulator.
By achieving a high level of integration and eliminating a separate primary-protection IC and linear regulator, the MAX1781 provides the smallest and most advanced, programmable battery-pack solution.
An advanced-software development toolset, which includes an optimised C compiler, an in-circuit emulator (ICE), and an SMBus monitor accessible from an integrated-development environment, allows the user to easily implement and debug advanced battery-pack fuel gauging and control software.
The MAX1781 is available in space-saving (7 x 7mm) 48-pin TQFN package, and is specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C).
Prices start at $9.40 (1000-up, FOB USA).
