According to Maxim Integrated Products, the MAX2247 is the industry's smallest silicon germanium linear power amplifier for 2.4GHz WLAN applications.

According to Maxim Integrated Products, the MAX2247 is the industry's smallest silicon germanium (SiGe) linear power amplifier (PA) for 2.4GHz WLAN applications The MAX2247 PA is available in the tiny 3 x 4 UCSP (chip-scale package) measuring only 1.5 x 2.0mm, three times smaller than the closest competitor's 3 x 3mm package

The small size makes it ideal for small form factor WLAN applications such as Compact Flash, mini-PCI, and SD cards.

In addition to being the smallest PA, the MAX2247 offers the highest level of integration: a three-stage power amplifier with on-chip input and interstage match, output power detector, and all necessary power management circuitry.

The power detector provides over 20dB of dynamic range with +/-0.8dB accuracy, allowing easy implementation of the accurate automatic level control (ALC) function without additional components.

This power detector is not available in GaAs HBT PA designs, which require an extra op amp and extra passive components to implement the ALC function.

The PA also features an external bias control pin.

Through an external DAC, the current can be throttled back at lower output power levels while maintaining sufficient ACPR performance.

As a result, maximum efficiency is maintained at all power levels.

The MAX2247 delivers 29dB gain, up to +24dBm linear power (while meeting IEEE802.11b spectral mask requirements), and +29dBm saturated power.

The high-output performance also makes it ideal for use in the new IEEE 802.11g 54Mbit/s WLAN standard, where the OFDM signal requires greater backoff and higher linearity performance.

The device operates over a 2.7 to 4.2V supply range.

An on-chip shutdown feature reduces operating current to 0.5uA, eliminating the need for an external supply switch.

Prices start at $1.70 (10,000-up, FOB USA).

A fully assembled evaluation kit (MAX2247EVKIT) is available to help reduce design time.
